Marouane Fellaini was so close to leaving Manchester United last summer that he actually had a deal agreed with Italian club AC Milan, it has been revealed.
Calciomercato, an Italian sports website, claimed on Wednesday evening [as per Sport Witness] that Fellaini had agreed terms with the San Siro side.
Fellaini ended up signing a huge new contract at Man United, much to the frustration of some fans. Manager Jose Mourinho had been desperate to see the Belgian renew his contract as he sees him as a vital player and option who fulfils his duties perfectly.
However, it looked nailed on that Fellaini would leave the club as he continually refused extension offers from United throughout the season. The Reds had been trying to tie Fellaini down to a new deal from about October and still had not done so by June.
Mourinho got his wish, insisting that United pay Fellaini the required wages to keep him. However, it shows just how close Fellaini was to leaving that he had a deal with a new club.
Milan’s director of football Massimiliano Mirabelli did comment on the fact that Fellaini wouldn’t be at United this season in summer. Obviously, that’s no longer true, but it’s interesting to find out that Fellaini was so close to signing for Milan.
Since committing his short-term future to United, Fellaini’s played 11 times in all competitions this season. He’s been impressive in some games and arguably his best quality is the fact that he follows the instructions of whichever manager he is under to perfection. Whether United fans like those instructions or not, is a different matter.
