Player ratings: Martial excellent, Man United claim nervy win

David de Gea 6 – Could not stop Gylfi Siggurdson’s penalty but had a tidy game between the sticks, gathering long-shots and crosses comfortably.

Ashley Young 6 – An accomplished defensive display. Produced one superb sliding challenge in the first half and held a good position without the ball. Could have been better going forward.

Chris Smalling 6 – Organised the back four with authority for most of the game but gave away an awful penalty, unnecessarily lunging in the box to give Everton a route back into the game.

Victor Lindelof 7 – Built on his superb display on Tuesday with another gutsy, fluid defensive exhibition. Looks growingly comfortable in a Manchester United shirt.

Luke Shaw 5 – Not his best display. Struggled to deal with the runs of Theo Walcott early on and was not his usual composed self in possession.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Once again played too sluggishly to begin with, often losing runners through the middle, but slowly grew into the game.

Fred 7 – An encouraging display from the Brazilian, who made his first start since last month. Moved the ball smartly and quickly from behind, affording United with the chance to break up the pitch with greater

Paul Pogba 7 – There was another episode of clumsiness which led to Everton scoring but the Frenchman, once again, played a central role in anything good United did, scoring a rebound from the spot and assisting Martial.

Juan Mata 6 – Started the game superbly, moving the ball swiftly and picking up good positions, but trailed off during the final 20 minutes.

Anthony Martial 7 – Another magnificent attacking display. Terrorised right-back Seamus Coleman in the first half, winning a penalty which Pogba scored, before scoring his fourth of the season with a sumptuous curling effort.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Replaced the out-of-form Romelu Lukaku but, unsurprisingly, did not flourish playing as a target man. Needed better service.
