Player ratings: Man United suffer late equaliser, Martial brilliant

David de Gea 6 – Beaten by a powerful Antonio Rudiger header in the first half but made two superb saves from Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante.

Ashley Young 7 – Could have posed a greater attacking threat but, crucially, did well in his man marking job of the dangerous Hazard.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Looked off the pace to start with but grew into the game, using the ball intelligently and taking up good defensive positions.

Chris Smalling 7 – Another very solid, physical defensive display. Kept Alvaro Morata at bay smartly and didn’t dive in.

Luke Shaw 7 – Produced an excellent response to receiving a new contract. Such an energetic, dedicated display which kept Willian quiet.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Started the game really slowly, often losing the ball, but as United got forward in the second half his physical influence proved pivotal.

Paul Pogba 7 – Gave away Chelsea’s goal in the first half but, once again, led a remarkable second half comeback from United, driving them forward from the middle with power and skill.

Juan Mata 7 – Played a vital role as CAM, providing a link up the pitch for United throughout the game. Such a silky, masterful player when he gets the chance. Had a big influence on Martial’s second goal.

Anthony Martial 8 – Magnifique from the Frenchman. Didn’t get much space in the first half but his brace in the second half – a powerful half volley followed by a beautiful curling strike – showed the world how special he is.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Worked his socks off in the first 45 minutes and then, with United getting forward, displayed maturity with his link-up play, laying on a superb assist for Martial.

Romelu Lukaku 6 – It is no coincidence that United got into this game the moment Lukaku did. Completely invisible in the first half, making just nine touches, but had a big physical impact on Chelsea’s back line after the break.
