Milinkovic-Savic reacts to Jose Mourinho turning up to watch him this week

Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has commented on rumours about a future move to Manchester United.

The Serie A star was questioned on the matter after Man United manager Jose Mourinho’s appearance at Serbia’s 2-0 win in the UEFA Nations League against neighbours Montenegro raised eyebrows.

With United midfielder Nemanja Matic, the only Serbian or Montenegrin international at the club, out of action due to a back injury, it was clear that Mourinho was scouting a potential transfer target.

Many suggested that Mourinho was looking at Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic, who played the full game of the Serbian side. Milinkovic-Savic came on in the second half, but said he would be delighted if Mourinho had been watching him.

“I’m a Lazio player, but it’s obvious that I was pleased that a coach of his stature came to see the game,” Milinkovic-Savic said, according to Calciomercato.it.

“I read a little bit everywhere he was here at the stadium to see me play, but that does not mean anything. Maybe he was not here for me, but for someone else.”

It is possible that Milinkovic-Savic was the target of Mourinho’s scouting mission. The Lazio man has been linked with United in the last two summer transfer windows.

However, with United signing Fred and pinning Marouane Fellaini down to a new contract, it seems unlikely that Mourinho would be considering a new midfielder.

A more pressing concern is the United defence, which has looked woeful in the early stages of this season.

Therefore, as Serbian outlets have reported consistently this week, Mourinho was likely taking a look at Fiorentina’s young defender Nikola Milenkovic.
