Michael Carrick has hailed the management of Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
The ex-midfielder captained the Reds under Mourinho last season before moving to the Portuguese’s coaching staff for this campaign. Carrick and similarly aged Kieran McKenna, both in their 30s, have received promotions in Mourinho’s set-up, with McKenna previously having been under-18s manager.
The pair have replaced Mourinho’s long-term assistant Rui Faria, who departed in the summer. Carrick has now seen Mourinho from both sides, as a player and as a coaching colleague, and revealed just how good it is to work and learn from the 55-year-old.
Mourinho has come under great pressure at Man United recently, but Carrick insisted that he should be regarded as one of the top three managers in the last three decades.
“”When people ask me about him – ‘Jose, what’s he like, what’s he bring?’ – it’s winning that is the thing that strikes me the most,” Carrick said.
“He’s proven it for so long, you know? To do it where he has gone and done it, it’s winning.
“He’s managed to win trophies at United. We’re striving now to get back to it, but as a manager you can’t hide from the fact about what he’s done. It’s up there with the very best.
“Fortunately for me, you look at the best managers over the last 25-30 years.
“You’re picking the top three, top five – two of them you’d say Jose or Sir Alex are right up there.
“I’ve been lucky enough to experience that and take what I can from both of them.”
Mourinho is a proven winner. He’s so driven by the end result and that’s why he’s had such great success across Europe in Portugal, England, Spain and Italy. However, that complete and utter focus on winning can lead to a toxic atmosphere at clubs when things are going badly.
That has been seen at Chelsea and Real Madrid before and now is on show at United. Hopefully Carrick’s influence, alongside McKenna’s, can help Mourinho to survive the recent tough period and come out the other side, something he hasn’t managed to do at other clubs.
