Michael Carrick insists that any claims that the Manchester United players are not trying under manager Jose Mourinho this season are completely unfounded.
The Man United coach was part of the playing squad until the end of last season when he hang up his boots after a fantastic playing career.
Now Carrick works as one of Jose Mourinho’s first-team coaches alongside former under-18s manager Kieran McKenna and Stefano Rapetti. The ex-midfielder has insisted that the United players are working hard to turn around their poor form.
The Reds had one of their worst ever starts to a Premier League campaign with three losses in their seven fixtures but their final game before the international break was an epic 3-2 comeback victory against Newcastle United and there is hope that it will spark a change in fortunes.
“As a player at United the expectation is there, the scrutiny is there and nowadays every little move you make people jump on it and judge it,” Carrick told the Manchester Evening News.
“The lads are human who make mistakes. It’s easy to throw out a player is not trying. It’s definitely not the case.”
It can be a lazy accusation from pundits that players are not trying, but the fact that such accusations have come from former-players such as Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes, as well as many others, gives weight to them.
It has looked at times as if the players have not been trying at their hardest, and it has produced some incredibly poor performances.
