Manchester United fans react to Luke Shaw's new contract

Manchester United supporters were unanimously pleased to see news that Luke Shaw had signed a fresh contract with the club on Thursday morning.

It was initially confirmed by ESPN‘s Rob Dawson – and then followed by the BBC, Times, and eventually the club itself – that Shaw had penned a new deal at Carrington.

He has agreed to a five-year deal and received a substantial pay-rise, going from earning £100,000-a-week to £160,000-a-week, which makes him one of the Premier League’s highest earning defenders in the process.

Supporters were delighted to see that Shaw’s hard work since the summer had been recognised by the club and Jose Mourinho.

Many – including myself – had written off Shaw. There comes a time when a player doesn’t succeed for so long that you feel they are past the point of return. When it came to Shaw, you sensed the problems were more mental and deep-lying. Raw ability has never been a problem.

But the penny has dropped this year. Shaw has relentlessly worked himself back to peak condition and, crucially, steered clear of injuries, allowing himself to get a run of games.

Shaw declared over the summer that he deserved to be a United player. He has, in the space of two months, shown exactly that.
