Man United board tell Mourinho to attack more to avoid sack - report

Manchester United’s board have reportedly instructed manager Jose Mourinho to change the club’s playing style if he is to avoid the sack in the coming weeks.

Rumours on Friday evening indicated that Mourinho was set to be fired regardless of Man United’s result against struggling Newcastle United at the weekend.

However, after a dramatic 3-2 fightback win from Mourinho’s side in which the Portuguese’s tactics were key and his passion showed on the touchline, there was no such sacking. United had rubbished the reports when they came out, too.

David McDonnell of The Mirror, who wrote the initial claim, now suggests that Mourinho has almost been given an ultimatum by the United board.

The journalist writes in The Mirror that Mourinho has been warned to drop his pragmatic approach where he ‘plays the odds’ and adopt a much more attacking style of play in order to keep his job at Old Trafford.

A number of figures at United were allegedly convinced that Mourinho would be gone after the Newcastle game and now assert that the manner of the victory against Newcastle has earned him a lifeline.

The Reds trailed by two goals at half-time having conceded two goals in the space of two minutes for the third time this season. The same happened in defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur.

A second-half resurgence saw Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic play far deeper, virtually in central defence and first-half substitute Juan Mata netted a free-kick to claw one back for United. Anthony Martial then fired in a powerful drive into the bottom left corner after a wonderful flick from Pogba and Alexis Sanchez headed home a late winner.

The fans, players and manager came together on Saturday and that will no doubt have given Mourinho some more time to prove he is the right man for the job.
