Gary Neville explains why Jose Mourinho won’t be sacked by Man United

Gary Neville has asserted that Jose Mourinho won’t be sacked by Manchester United in the coming weeks because of the Reds’ 3-2 comeback victory against Newcastle United.

Second half goals from Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez rescued the game for Mourinho’s side on Saturday evening after the Reds had trailed by two goals after just 11 minutes at Old Trafford.

Newcastle scored twice in three minutes, having scored only four goals in the Premier League in the seven previous fixtures. Mourinho went in to the game with rumours that he’d face the sack whatever the result against the Magpies. United rubbished such reports, but the start to the match made for ugly viewing for all United fans and Mourinho himself.

Neville, though, now believes that Mourinho will be United manager when the club return to action following the upcoming international break.

“In terms of those earlier reports emanating that Jose wouldn’t be at the club, I’d be stunned if he wasn’t at Stamford Bridge in a couple of weeks’ time,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“The players in the last 25 minutes responded, and they were fighting for everything, they were pushing until the end. It was a little bit messy, it wasn’t the perfect performance in football terms.”

While the performance itself was abysmal for the majority of the game, United did come back and did so in electric fashion. Old Trafford found its voice, the players found their quality and Mourinho found his passion.

The coming together of those three groups will give the Portuguese coach a lifeline at United, according to Neville.

“If Jose watches it back, I’m sure he could make a horror video with some of the mistakes his team made,” the former-United man conceded.

“He had to make substitutions, change the system and tactics. It was a good day in some ways as it demonstrated the spirit at the club.

“It brought the fans, the managers and players together, and they’re the key elements of a football club. There has to be that connection between them. The last few weeks, there has been that divide. They all came together in that last 25 minutes.”

It was a match which started in a fashion typical of United this season but still painful to the extreme. It ended in a manner more typical of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

However, while it was fantastic moment of celebration, when reflecting on the game a couple of days later, it still feels like a terrible performance that ended with a good result papering over the many, many cracks that have developed at Old Trafford under Mourinho
