Juan Mata was quite literally lost for words in his latest Monday blog post following Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat at West Ham United on Saturday.
Jose Mourinho’s men sunk to new depths of misery with an inexplicably awful performance at the Olympic Stadium, conceding twice in the first half and immediately losing another goal right after Marcus Rashford scored to give Man United hope later in the game.
The fallout from the result has been toxic, with supporters now almost universally behind the notion that Mourinho should be sacked by the club.
And Mata, at such a difficult time, reduced his usually eloquent blog to a mere 36 words, insisting it was not the time for posts.
“Today, my blog post is shorter than usual,” he wrote. “In fact, it isn’t really a time for posts. I want to thank all of you who support us during these tough times. I understand your frustrations.”
“The upcoming game against Valencia is a special one for me, but above all it is another chance to get back to winning ways.”
We have approached something of an apocalyptic state of affairs at United. There will always be friction and debate after bad results, as there has been in Mourinho’s two years and four months at the club, but now there is no debate: every United fan, without exception, can agree that this team has reached an irreparable crisis.
There is a kind of chaos enveloping which feels dangerously similar to team’s short time under the management of David Moyes. The results are just as bad. And when you are a player, like Mata, who has seen and felt this all before, what are you meant to say?
