Alexis Sanchez was reportedly left furious by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s decision to drop him from the matchday squad for Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham United.
The Chilean was seen watching the lunchtime fixture at the London Stadium but wasn’t even named on the substitutes bench, with Mourinho seemingly punishing him for a string of poor performances.
Sanchez signed for Mourinho and Man United in January of this year in a swap-deal that saw Armenian attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the other way to join Arsenal. It was in London where Sanchez had great success, leading his team in game after game and saving them time after time.
Since his move to the north of England, things have been bad. Despite having a full summer off due to Chile not qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in Russia, a luxury not afforded to many of his teammates, Sanchez has not looked fresh nor impressive.
Many United fans demanded he was dropped well before the West Ham game, which was a third humiliating defeat of the Premier League season for United in just seven games.
The Mirror suggest that Sanchez made his anger at being dropped clear to all those behind the scenes during the game. It’s not surprising that he was dropped, but it’s not surprising he was angry, too.
The Chilean could have represented a good option on the bench for United. Instead, Mourinho could do nothing while he saw his team sink to another embarrassing result. This was after Mourinho’s selection and tactics, mainly the choice to go three at the back with midfielder Scott McTominay in defence, had contributed greatly to the performance of his side.
It’s simply yet another story added to the dark cloud that looms over Mourinho at United.
