Jose Mourinho criticised Marcus Rashford for a “sad” performance and Scott McTominay for looking “scared on the pitch” during Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Newcastle United.
Rashford started on the left hand side and, although working hard, seemed off the pace, missing two big chances and lacking composure on the ball.
McTominay was moved to central defence after Newcastle took a two goal lead and, understandably, looked miles out of his depth.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho noted that the pair – substituted for Marouane Fellaini and Alexis Sanchez – did not handle the pressure well enough
Jose: "Marcus Rashford was sad, Scott McTominay was scared on the pitch."

That first half capitulation, above anything, absolutely reeked of a team lacking any sort of confidence. They looked scared to be touching the ball. It was, put simply, a mess.
And it follows that the two youngest players would suffer the most from that. United’s problems are systemic and has, over time, eroded the bond between Mourinho in his team, culminating in either tactical dysfunction or the kind of kitchen sink performance seen at the end against Newcastle.
Players like Rashford and McTominay, in this sense, need more support. To survive in situations like these – when the pressure is on and the situation seemingly untenable – you have to be mature.
