Details revealed about how Mourinho's half-time teamtalk inspired comeback vs Newcastle

Jose Mourinho consulted Paul Pogba at half-time of Manchester United’s 3-2 comeback victory against Newcastle United.

The Sun reports that Pogba inspired his side’s epic fightback with a tactical suggestion to manager Mourinho.

Mourinho had been under significant pressure going into Saturday evening’s game amid claims from The Mirror that he was set to be sacked regardless of the result against Newcastle.

Trailing by two goals at half-time after conceding twice in three minutes for the third time this season, Mourinho consulted his players in the dressing room at the break.

A number of figures made suggestions as to what was going wrong, according to The Sun, but it Pogba’s idea to move himself deeper on the pitch into central defence and bring on Marouane Fellaini that saw United rescue the game.

Mourinho seemingly followed Pogba’s idea and did bring Fellaini on at half-time, replacing Scott McTominay. Nemanja Matic then moved into central defence alongside Chris Smalling and Pogba played just in front of the pair, with Fellaini ahead of him.

The Frenchman controlled second half proceedings from a deeper role. He played the traditional number 6 role to perfection but also contributed in a major way in attacks.

Pogba was vital in both United’s second and third goals. For Anthony Martial’s equaliser, Pogba provided the moment of genius required to create an opportunity with a one-touch backhell flick to Martial on the volley. His compatriot duly finished and did so fantastically. The third goal saw Pogba hold the ball up for the right amount of time before laying it off to allow the cross to come into the box, where Alexis Sanchez was waiting to head home.

It could represent a chance for Mourinho and Pogba’s relationship to improve having been on the rocks for a number of weeks now.
