In the absence of Eden Hazard, who wasn’t even fit enough to make the matchday squad, Chelsea’s English contingent stepped up to ensure the Blues breezed past a sluggish Burnley side, who had overcome a poor start to the season to take seven points from their previous four games.
The first half started with Chelsea on the back foot as Burnley’s wingers piled in crosses to put Spanish keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga under pressure, but following an early scare Ross Barkley played a slide through ball into the feet of Alvaro Morata, who continued his recent good form to poke home the opening goal. From there on in Chelsea took full control of proceedings, and were it not for the heroics of Joe Hart in goal for Burnley, Maurizio Sarri’s men could’ve been out of sight by half-time. As it happened the Blues would wait until the second half to finally make their pressure count.
The instrumental Barkley firmly cemented his place in Sarri’s starting eleven when he drove a low shot into the bottom corner from just outside the area to double Chelsea’s lead, before he set up Willian to curl in a third, albeit via a slight deflection. The win was then wrapped up in the most satisfying of fashions when academy graduate Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored his first Premier League goal in over two years when the ball broke to him following a corner.
