Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has kept rumours linking him to Manchester United alive by revealing that he is no closer to signing a new contract at his current club.
The Belgian defender was a target of Jose Mourinho and Man United in the summer but the Reds couldn’t prise him away from the London club.
Mourinho is desperate to sign defensive reinforcements and his desire to do so has been proved correct by a woeful start to the season defensively for United.
Alderweireld was asked for an update on his contract situation at Spurs, and admitted that he’s not close to penning a new deal.
“Not that I can say, no,” Alderweireld told Sky Sports. “I’m focused on Spurs and trying to help the team. That’s all I can do.”
Some summer reports suggested that Man United’s transfer chief Ed Woodward had deemed Alderweireld as too old to spend a big sum on.
However, the 29-year-olds contract expires at the end of the season and while Tottenham do have the option to take up a 12 month extension, doing so would activate a £25 million buyout clause.
It’s likely that United would be keen to trigger that, given that out of the Alderweireld could have could yet have another four or five years as a starting central defender at an elite club.
