Jose Mourinho has told Manchester United’s board to show their faith in him as manager by signing two central defences in the January transfer window.
The Portuguese coach wanted to bring in defensive reinforcements in the summer but all his targets were met with worries by the Man United board. Harry Maguire of Leicester City was reportedly considered to be too expensive. Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld was supposedly seen as too old while a number of other names were heavily linked.
Yet by August 9th on transfer deadline day, Mourinho hadn’t been able to welcome anyone new into the centre of his defence where he had serious issues this season.
ESPN FC reports that Mourinho has now instructed the club to sign Milan Skriniar of Inter Milan and Alessio Romagnoli of AC Milan in a double swoop on Serie A that would cost at least £80 million.
Mourinho hopes that the fact both Skriniar and Romagnoli are just 23 years old and have huge potential to improve will convince the board to sign them. They have previously been wary of bringing in old players and selling young ones, leading them to refuse to sell Anthony Martial in the summer.
The report states that Skriniar and Romagnoli would cost £40 million each. However, the latter is AC Milan captain and Skriniar is hughly talented and seen as a long-term star at the other San Siro side.
It’s more likely, especially given it’ll be the January transfer window when prices are even further exaggerated, that Skriniar and Romagnoli would cost upwards of £60 million.
Whether the United board is willing to sign both is unknown but seems unlikely. United definitely do need defensive reinforcements, though.
