Manchester United had the chance to beat Chelsea to the signature of youngster Ethan Ampadu before the Blues were even aware of him, it has been revealed.
The Manchester Evening News reports that Sir Alex Ferguson had personally asked the club to sign him after being impressed with his performances during a junior tournament at the club back in 2013.
Ampadu, who was as young as 12 at the time, was said to have been described as a ‘proper player’ by the famous United manager.
However, the report claims that the deal fell through during the summer as David Moyes took charge of the club.
Chelsea sealed a deal to sign the player from Exeter back in 2017 at the age of 16 having enjoyed trials at the club and the Welsh international has impressed whenever he’s been given the chance.
Ampadu was highly rated at Exeter and has been tipped to achieve big things in the game.
