Manchester United are set to recite an injury boost in central defence with Marcos Rojo to be welcomed back in the under-23s.
The Argentinian has been out of action since suffering an injury during the summer’s World Cup. Rojo was substituted at half-time due to an injury in his country’s round of 16 loss against France.
Rojo will make his return for the U23s on Friday night against Reading, and will be one of two first team defenders in the side, according to the Manchester Evening News.
New signing Diogo Dalot will also play in the under-23s, for the second consecutive match. He had a pre-existing injury before signing for Man United from FC Porto, and has been recovering for the last four months.
He played his first minutes in the U23s’ win against Stoke City a couple of weeks ago, before the international break.
There was some suggestion that Dalot could be in the matchday squad for the first team fixture against Watford on Saturday evening, but that looks set to be wrong.
Dalot was part of Jose Mourinho’s pre-season tour squad, but was never going to play as he remained in recovery from a meniscus injury.
Rojo, meanwhile, was touted to other clubs in the summer transfer window by United. Both Everton and Wolves were seen as possible destinations, but nothing came of any links.
Mourinho will be pleased to welcome the pair back, although Rojo may need one more under-23s appearance after tonight to convince his manager that he’s ready for action again.
United’s defence has been their weak spot in a rough start to the season in which they’ve lost 50% of their games, often due to individual defensive errors.
