Jose Mourinho should be praised for not faking his emotions to the media, fans and players, according to Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgian forward is a great fan of Mourinho, who he has now played under twice; for a period at Chelsea and currently at Old Trafford.
Lukaku has frequently defended the Portuguese in the face of criticism from the press, demanding that people realise Mourinho’s outer personality is different to the one that the players see.
“People know a side from him which is he’s a winner,” Lukaku told BBC’s Football Focus programme, which will air on Saturday.
“But what I like about him is he’s not going to fake his emotions. When he’s mad, you know he is mad. When he’s happy, you see he is happy.
“I don’t understand why people don’t like the realness about him. When he’s mad at me I know he is mad at me, and I try to do what he wants so he is happy again.”
Mourinho is certainly one for displaying his emotions in the media, and often takes it out on the journalists asking him questions.
Often, he’s criticised for his harsh treatment of players in the media, including to Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial.
But Shaw has admitted that Mourinho’s public criticism was correct at the time and others have suggested that the manager’s tough love can work well on a player’s attitude and performance.
Lukaku insists that behind-the-scenes Mourinho is a different man.
“My relationship with him is cool,” he continued. “He makes me laugh, he makes the players laugh, he’s a real family guy. He fights for his players, but he’s real. When you’re not happy, you don’t need to fake your emotions.
“You should respect that he wants to keep his own personality and not shy away from confrontation. Here, he really wants us to improve. He is a normal guy, we get along well. He is cool with everybody.”
The Belgian is one of many players to speak positively about their relationship with Mourinho behind closed doors. It’s a shame, in a way, that United fans don’t get to see that side of their manager too often. Maybe the pressure on him would be lesser if the media and fans did get to see that sometimes.
