Watford midfielder Abdou Doucoure has given an insight into Paul Pogba’s character, as the former looks to join the Manchester United midfielder in the France squad.
Pogba is one of the stars in the France side after a glorious World Cup campaign this summer. He’ll face off against Doucoure this weekend as Watford host Man United at Vicarage Road on Saturday evening.
The two played together at a much younger age and know each other well. Doucoure, speaking ahead of the game, said he knows Pogba is a show off, but that the United man has earned the right to be.
“He was the same,” Doucoure said of a young Pogba.
“He liked to show off. He’s a very nice guy, always very natural.
“Today he’s in a different dimension. He’s a superstar now.
“I’ve known him for a long time. It’s always great to play against him. Of course, I want to be better than him on the pitch and help my team as much as I can to try to win this battle in midfield.”
Doucoure admitted that if Pogba isn’t playing to his full potential for United, he’d be happy for this weekend only because it’d mean a better chance of a strong result for Watford at home.
“If Paul is a little bit less (influential) for his team, for sure it’s better for Watford,” he admitted.
Doucoure revealed that he still speaks to Pogba sometimes, and said he has a similar character to Benjamin Mendy, left-back for United’s local rivals Manchester City.
“We speak together sometimes. I sent him a message during the World Cup and congratulated him,” Doucoure continued.
“He has this personality. He got this because he’s good on the pitch.
“Paul and (Manchester City’s Benjamin) Mendy bring a lot of personality and show off. It’s good.”
United fans are well aware of Pogba’s natural charisma, but now need to see more from their star man on the pitch to back that up.
