Shkodran Mustafi has revealed his thought process behind set pieces after grabbing his sixth Premier League goal for Arsenal earlier in the month (via Arsenal.com).
It’s clear that Arsenal are becoming dangerous from set-piece situations this season after a number of goals and good opportunities already.
Shkodran Mustafi grabbed the opening goal of the match in the 3-2 victory over Cardiff City two weeks ago and now, the German has given an insight into his and Arsenal’s thinking from dead ball situations.
“When the opponent is man-marking, you have to figure out how to get that split-second advantage from the player who is defending against you,” Mustafi told the official Arsenal website.
“Most of the time, I’m just standing still. I’m not someone who moves around a lot because it makes it difficult for myself as well.
“I wait for the split-second where I can run onto the ball. When I am attacking I try to be the one who is acting first and let the defender react.
“You don’t have to be the bigger player to score the goal. It’s more about the timing, the passion. It’s important to go with full commitment and time your run and jump.”
It’s something which Shkodran Mustafi has certainly improved on during his time at Arsenal. Four of his six Premier League goals have come in the last twelve months and the German will be hoping to add to his goal against Cardiff in the coming weeks and months.
