Michael Owen has revealed how former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher asked him about Sir Alex Ferguson’s team talks when he joined the club in 2009.
Owen became a household name at Liverpool, making his debut aged just 17 and scoring 158 goals for the club.
He joined Man United in 2009, much to the fury of Liverpool supporters, and scored a famous injury time winner against Manchester City before finally getting his hands on a Premier League title in 2011.
Speaking in a recent interview, Owen noted that Carragher would ask him what it was like to receive a Sir Alex team talk.
“I always remember coming off the pitch for the first time and looking at my phone in the dressing room,” he said.
“Carragher text me – we’re big mates. It said: ‘Phone me as soon as you can mate, I want you to let me know what a Fergie team talk is like’.”
Carragher, meanwhile, would have been witnessing the last rites of Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool career, when Rafa really did start cracking up. Then came Roy Hodgson. Then came Kenny Dalglish. And then it was Brendan Rogers, and before long Carragher was hanging up his boots.
Owen, on the other hand, was coming off the bench here and there for United, scoring 17 goals in total – one of which came in the League Cup final.
He was hardly a club legend but, crucially, can always look lack at his Premier League winners medal, making Carragher’s decision to be a one-club man – whilst admirable – seem slightly amateurish when it comes to the pursuit of silverware.
