Nemanja Matic has confirmed that Jose Mourinho has been trying to deflect attention away from the Manchester United players over the last couple of weeks.
The Portuguese manager has said a number of controversial things since Man United endured their worst start to a season for more than two decades. Arrogance, cheekiness, stubbornness or delusion have all been on show from Mourinho.
Matic conceded that his boss knows what he’s doing when he’s sat in front of reporters, and said the players appreciate it.
United got back to winning ways on Sunday with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Turf Moor against Burnley, with Matic in the side.
“He knows what he is doing, for sure, and it’s good for us,” Matic told ManUtd.com.
“He’s one of the best managers in the world. You know what he has won in his career, so that shows you everything.
”I think he’s dealing very well with the pressure. That’s why he is here at Manchester United and I don’t see any difference.“
Mourinho is the master of the distraction, and it’s no coincidence that all the attention over the last two weeks has been on him and his failings rather than those of his players.
The United boss has his faults, and he start to the season has been far from good enough, but the criticism of him has been exaggerated. The away fans at Burnley showed how much matchgoing Reds still back their manager.
Matic also spoke of how Mourinho managed to nullify the aerial threat of Burnley by starting Marouane Fellaini.
“The manager was very confident before the game; he prepared the game in a very good way,” Matic continued.
“We knew they could make problems for us on those long balls. That’s why Fellaini played close to our defence to collect those balls and I think this performance shows we know how to play football and we can still compete for the title.”
