Juan Mata has spoken about sitting in with Manchester United’s away fans in Sunday’s 2-0 victory at Burnley.
The Spaniard was spotted near the front of the away end at Turf Moor after being left out of Jose Mourinho’s match day squad for the Premier League game.
Also alongside him was Sergio Romero and Scott McTominay as well as ex-Man United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard.
Mata said he enjoyed being in the away end and that it made him feel better after not making the squad for the game itself.
“On a personal level, the afternoon didn’t start so well for me when I found out that I wouldn’t be involved in the game,” Mata wrote in his weekly blog.
“But two things helped me to feel better about myself: the result and the atmosphere from our fans in the stands.
“The passion, spirit, intensity and energy that comes from the fans is the engine that drives football.”
United’s away following is absolutely superb and got behind the team brilliantly on Sunday. After pressure on manager Jose Mourinho during the week, the Portuguese’s name was sung relentlessly as the travelling Reds showed that they still believe he is the right man for the job, no matter what the media suggest.
Mourinho has applauded the Stretford End after their continued support last Monday despite United being humiliated 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. The fans clearly appreciated the gesture.
“Many thanks to all of you who made the trip to Burnley and cheered us on relentlessly,” Mata continued. “And, of course, thank you for chanting my name and singing ‘my song’! You’re all amazing.
“The club is special for a lot of reasons, and undoubtedly one of them is all of you out there. You struggle along with us when we lose and celebrate with us when we win, just like yesterday.”
It’s great to see United players in the away end when they’re not playing, as it means they have the opportunity to experience the life of a fan for 90 minutes or so and understand what it means to the fans.
