Manchester United are yet to decide whether to extend Ander Herrera‘s contract this season, according to reports.
The Spaniard, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2014, is out of contract in June and will be free to speak with other clubs from January onwards.
He only made 13 Premier League starts last season – 25 in all competitions – but played an important role in big names, most notably against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final.
And according to the Evening Standard‘s James Robson, United remain undecided on whether to hand the midfielder a fresh deal.
29 is a tricky age for matters such as these. The back and forth between United and Marouane Fellaini last year, for example, was a painfully protracted affair.
But Herrera, you suspect, will desperately want to stay at Old Trafford. He is a player who loves the club and his willingness to play in a back three against Tottenham Hotspur, despite never playing that position before, was an example of why so many supporters love him.
You can understand why United are holding fire. Next summer, given the club’s current situation, could entail a completely different landscape to where we are now, and it may mean an overhaul in the midfield area – especially if Paul Pogba leaves the club.
