Ethan Apmadu may not have featured for Maurizio Sarri yet this season but he certainly gave the Italian something to think about with his performance against the Republic of Ireland.
Wales boss Ryan Giggs named Ampadu in midfield alongside experienced duo Joe Allen and Aaron Ramsey and the former Exeter City youngster did not disappoint.
Having started in defence throughout pre-season, he showed his versatility with a dominant performance in the middle of the park, in which he played a key role in the third goal of the game.
Ampadu won back possession on the half-way mark and went on a surging run before sending a perfectly-timed pass into the path of Ramsey, who slotted home Wales’ third goal.
Not only did the versatile youngster impress on the ball, but he once again showed the composure and knowledge of a player way beyond his years.
It’s something that has been a staple of his game during his time at Chelsea, playing with such maturity. A performance of such quality will go a long way in nailing down a place in Giggs’ plans, with the former Manchester United winger taking charge of his first competitive for Wales last night.
Giggs’ named a new-look Wales squad included promising youngsters David Brooks and Tom Lawrence alongside Ampadu.
Sarri, who turned down approaches for the youngster over the summer, is clearly a fan of the player but it is yet to be seen what role he will play under the Italian head coach.
His range of passing and eye for a tackle certainly gives the Italian options, with the youngster hoping to make a mark at Stamford Bridge in the near future.
