Manchester United missed out on the signing of defender Yerry Mina in the summer transfer window, reportedly because of a failure by manager Jose Mourinho to call the player.
The Sun suggest that Mina was convinced to join Everton instead of Man United in the final days of the window by Toffees boss Marco Silva.
Mina, 23, signed for Silva and Everton from FC Barcelona for around £27 million. United had been interested prior to the deal being completed, and The Sun claim that the Reds made two offers for Mina.
Mina was subject to an initial offer from United, and one that was accepted. But after his agent proposed excessive demands for himself, United pulled out. Later, they returned with another deal, and Barcelona accepted once more.
However, while United messed around, Silva won Mina‘s trust and faith. The Colombian had been accepting to move to Manchester after the first offer had been accepted.
The Sun’s angle on the story is unsurprisingly one blaming Jose Mourinho. Previous reports have suggested that United’s board decided not to pursue the player further because his price had almost trebled simply because of two good performances in the World Cup. Before the tournament, he was valued at £11 million by Barcelona.
It seems unlikely that the entire move shifted because Mourinho did not call Mina.
The new signing is yet to play for Everton due to a foot injury. Whatever the reason he didn’t sign for United, Mourinho will be disappointed not to have more defensive options after a rocky start to the season in which United have already conceded three goals in a single game on two separate occasions.
