Man United dismiss reports of Zidane talks as “nonsense” - report

Manchester United have strongly dismissed reports that they have spoken with former-Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane about taking over from Jose Mourinho at the club.

ESPN FC and the Telegraph are two of a number of outlets reporting that Man United have told them in no uncertain terms that they have not contacted Zidane.

beIN Sports suggested as such in the aftermath of United’s third loss of the season in eight games. Despite a second-half goal from substitute Marcus Rashford, United were humiliated at the London Stadium on Saturday lunchtime in a 3-1 loss to West Ham, who started the game in the relegation zone.

Jose Mourinho hasn’t led his side to victory in the last three games, the second terrible run of form for the Reds this season. Hope has already been lost for the 2018/19 campaign, which is astonishing given the Premier League season is only seven games young.

United are already nine points behind rivals Manchester City and Liverpool, and seven behind Chelsea. Mourinho has also seen his side crash out of the League Cup on penalties to Championship side Derby County, managed by Frank Lampard.

Zidane, meanwhile, has been out of work since resigning as Real Madrid manager at the end of last season, when he won his third consecutive UEFA Champions League. The Frenchman has won the tournament in every season he’s been a manager of a top flight side.

United have dismissed reports that Zidane is replacing Mourinho as “nonsense”. It’s entirely unsurprising that United have responded in such a manner, but they also did so when they were lining up Mourinho himself to replace Louis van Gaal, even when the Dutchman had just lifted the FA Cup with United.

The club hardly acted in a loyal and honourable manner with the Mourinho-van Gaal situation, but now United fans will want a swift resolution if Mourinho is going to be sacked.
