José Mourinho has described Marcus Rashford as “naive” after the young Manchester United forward was sent off at the weekend.
Rashford, now 20, came off the bench to play only 11 minutes before being sent off with a straight red card for violent conduct against Burnley’s Phil Bardsley.
It didn’t affect the game in the end, with Man United finishing comfortable 2-0 winners thanks to Romelu Lukaku’s first-half double.
But it was a reminder of Rashford’s young age, and a small reminder of ex-United striker Wayne Rooney, who was known for similar outbursts when he was younger.
Asked about the incident, Mourinho said: “I would say naive. A kid and an experienced man. Marcus is still a naive boy.”
Rashford was on the end of a late tackle from Phil Bardsley, before the experienced Englishman kicked out at the United striker. Rashford subsequently reacted by moving his head towards Bardsley’s and referee John Moss deemed it enough for a straight sending off.
The striker will now miss three games after the international break finishes, though for now he’ll go away with England for the Three Lions’ first game in the UEFA Nations League.
It was stupid from Rashford to react as he did, especially given the fact that he has enjoyed a difficult start the season with poor performances and little game time. It was an opportunity to impress Mourinho in a game with very little pressure given United led by two goals, and Rashford did not take that chance.
