England manager Gareth Southgate has insisted Marcus Rashford is in good hands under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
The youngster, who has only made one start at Old Trafford this season, scored in consecutive games for England against Spain and Switzerland.
Rashford’s success up front under Southgate has led to many pondering whether the 20-year-old would be better off finding a club where he would be guaranteed to start every week.
But Southgate is adamant Rashford should stick with Mourinho, who he insists values the youngster enormously.
“Jose thinks the world of Marcus,” he said.
“He’s a huge admirer of him, but he has got his job to do. There is huge competition for places at his club so you can understand that.
“I understand the difficulties that club managers have. They have to try and win matches. They have to rotate their squads.
“It’s not my business to interfere with club managers. They have a difficult job to do and they have big squads at the top six, with huge competition for places.”
There appears to be a strange consensus emerging that Rashford, still in the nascent stages of his career, is being wasted at Man United.
But a brief look at the numbers throws that notion under serious question: Rashford has made over 100 appearances under Mourinho alone, started in an FA Cup final in May, scored against all of the top six aside from Tottenham Hotspur, and hardly ever missed out on the squad.
During that time he has worked with forwards like Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, learning every day from world class talent and frequently playing in big games.
Perhaps in a couple of years we should ask questions if Rashford happened to be in a similar situation at Old Trafford. Right now, though, he is living the dream.
