Ander Herrera remains a potential target for La Liga champions FC Barcelona.
The Spanish midfielder has been at Manchester United since 2014, signing during Louis van Gaal’s spell as manager.
Despite van Gaal leaving after two seasons at the club, Herrera has remained a relatively important player at Old Trafford, being trusted by current Jose Mourinho boss in a number of big games.
Herrera’s contract at Man United runs out at the end of this season, and thus he’s on the radar of a number of clubs who could look to bring him on a free transfer. United have a policy of not giving long-term contracts to players in or nearing their 30s, and at 29, Herrera is unlikely to be handed any kind of long deal. However, there are contract negotiations ongoing.
The Sun suggest Barcelona want to sign Herrera to add to their midfield options. They reportedly looked at the former-Athletic Bilbao man in summer, but couldn’t bring him to the Nou Camp.
It could be a good move for all involved, but it would make no sense to allow Herrera to leave on a free transfer. Whether Mourinho wants to keep him at United or not, he should be given a new deal to ensure the club receive something for a player they paid over £20 million for just a few years ago.
He’s no longer a first choice in midfield, and shouldn’t be. He is, though, a great character to have at the club as an honest, hard-working, professional and thoroughly likeable figure who can also play an important role as a squad player. Mourinho said as much in a recent interview. an
