Second-half goals from Pedro and Eden Hazard maintained Maurizio Sarri’s 100% unbeaten start to the Premier League season, as a stubborn Bournemouth side fell to a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.
For the third game in a row, Chelsea left it late to secure the three points as substitute Pedro struck the opening goal with just under 20 minutes to play, exchanging passes with Olivier Giroud, another fellow substitute, before his seeing his deflected effort beat former Chelsea ‘keeper Asmir Begovic. Eden Hazard made the game safe on 86 minutes with an angled finish, which in turn produced yet another assist for the rampaging Marcos Alonso.
Chelsea dominated possession, with over 73% of the ball, but just as a was the case against Newcastle they failed to create many clear-cut opportunities and Alonso’s scuffed effort, which hit the base of the post, at the end of the first half was their best chance to break the deadlock in the opening 45. Another former Blue, this time in the form of Dutch defender Nathan Ake, had the chance to give Bournemouth the lead in the second-half but he blazed over from all of three-yards out and Pedro’s 72nd-minute strike compounded the Cherries’ misfortune.
Chelsea move into second place with a win, behind only Liverpool on goal difference, whilst Bournemouth remain sixth having already picked up seven points this season.
