Luke Shaw will recover in time for Manchester United’s opening Champions League game of the season away to Swiss side Young Boys next week, according to the Times.
The defender, voted the club’s best player in August, picked up a concussion during England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain over the weekend and had to be carried off in a stretcher.
He has returned to Carrington this week having been ruled out of the trip to Watford on Saturday as he serves a mandatory seven day rest period after the blow to his head.
And according to the Times‘ Paul Hirst, medical professionals have ruled out any possibility of Shaw travelling to Vicarage Road but expect him to return to action for the meeting with Young Boys next Wednesday.
The BBC, it should be noted, holds a different view: Simon Stone had claimed this morning that there is in fact a chance of Shaw playing on Saturday, with Man United treating Shaw in an “enhanced care setting”. FA guidelines state a player with concussion should not play for 14 days but do allow for a player to return earlier than that if seven specific guidelines are met.
However, medical staff must make a careful assessment leading up to the game. They will need to be absolutely sure of a full recovery before making him available to Jose Mourinho, who no doubt would want to use him following such a fantastic start to the campaign.
