Youngster Angel Gomes has emphasised the importance of keeping level-headed as he works his way towards Manchester United’s first team.
Gomes made his senior debut aged just 16, coming on for Wayne Rooney against Crystal Palace in May 2016, just a few days after becoming the youngest ever recipient of the ‘Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year’ award.
He is perhaps the academy’s brightest prospect at this moment in time, leading the line for the Under 23s with pace and panache in attacking in midfield.
Speaking to ESPN‘s Rob Dawson, Gomes stressed the importance of keeping always his head down amid the hype surrounding his name.
“I’ve got to put that [expectation] to one side,” he said. “The best players get to the top because they have stayed level-headed. I’ve got to carry on working hard and keep putting everything in to training and games.”
Gomes has a tantalisingly good future lying ahead of him. Those inside the academy, such as former midfielder Nicky Butt, see Gomes as a unique talent, blessed with mesmerising control, a low centre or gravity and, most importantly, an appetite.
He has continued to grow since that cameo at Old Trafford two years ago, graduating to Ricky Spragia’s Under 23 side and excelling both at youth level for England and in Europe with United.
This is a player who can replicate the successes of Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford in recent years. And he will know that only hard work will get him there.
