Video: Mourinho with fantastic gesture to Manchester United fans after Spurs loss

Jose Mourinho showed his appreciation for the Manchester United fans’ support after Monday night’s terrible 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Portuguese manager could do nothing as his side were on the wrong end of a hiding in the second half at Old Trafford. Yet unlike often, he didn’t go straight down the tunnel to berate his players.

Instead, he stood in front of the Stretford End, picking up a shirt and a scarf, and applauded the supporters for more than a minute.

The fans were fantastic at Old Trafford, even after Man United went 3-0 down. Chants of “we’ll never die”, “Red Army” and “forever and ever, we’ll follow the boys” were loud, despite many having left.

Those who remained clearly impressed Mourinho. He later went on to hail United’s fans, as he has often done, after the game.

United were terrible throughout. Mourinho’s reaction after the game doesn’t make the loss excusable, even though it is a great gesture towards the supporters.

Mourinho has seen his side concede three goals in two consecutive games and has now been at the club for three years. The performance in the second half against Tottenham did not look like a side who has had the same manager for two seasons already.

There were some positive signs in the first half. But United are not clinical, they do not play with a consistent style of play. Fellaini might be plan B, but quite what plan A is uncertain anyway.

United’s fans will continue to support Mourinho, at least those who go to the matches home and away. But none will have been impressed with the performance.
