Player Ratings: Man United fans furious after embarrassing performances against Spurs

David de Gea 6 – Pretty helpless for the first two of Tottenham Hotspur’s goals – the first sailing over him and the second arrowed into the bottom corner – but could have been stronger for Lucas Moura’s late strike. Stopped the scoreline from getting embarrassing with a good one-on-one save from Dele Alli following Victor Lindelof’s mistake.

Antonio Valencia 6 – Performed with superb energy in the first half, often finding space behind Danny Rose and looking to bomb forward, but couldn’t stop his defence from crumbling early in the second half.

Chris Smalling 6 – The better of Manchester United’s central defenders. Positioned himself well and made a couple of key blocks in the box, only to lose Lucas Moura for Spurs’ third. You do wonder how long his partnership with Jones will last.

Phil Jones 5 – A frenetic first appearance of the season: could have given away a penalty, lost Harry Kane for Tottenham’s first, and looked generally quite jittery.

Luke Shaw 7 – He may have ended up on the losing side but the Englishman can hold his head high: tenacious, composed, precise, energetic and ambitious at left-back. The best United player by a mile.

Nemanja Matic 5 – Looked too slow on his first game of the season, losing the ball too often and struggling for momentum with his teammates. Thrown in too soon, and taken off on the hour mark.

Ander Herrera 6 – Battled valiantly in the first half, fronting the side’s high tempo and keeping Spurs’ midfield at bay, only to lose all positional sense early in the second half as United crumbled.

Fred 6 – The Brazilian’s determination and execution was there for all to see. Used the ball well and got forward whenever he had the chance. Decision making dropped off as the game went on but the early signs are positive, if nothing else.

Paul Pogba 5 – Failed to properly impose himself on the game. Struggled to find his passing range or space down the middle, and snatched at his passes in the final third. Not good enough.

Jesse Lingard 7 – Injected a spark into United’s attacking play, bringing the ball forward speedily and finding good positions. Has to be a regular starter.

Romelu Lukaku 5 – The game could have been so different had the Belgian, having rounded Hugo Lloris, struck wide of an open goal early on. Tested Lloris with a stinging shot later on but, aside from that, his influence was frustratingly minimal.

Subsitutes

Victor Lindelof

Alexis Sanchez

Marouane Fellaini
