Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has ruled out the prospect of signing Anthony Martial this summer.
The Frenchman’s agent noted in June that his client wanted to leave. Mourinho’s recent comments regarding Martial’s decision to leave the tour to attend the birth of his child last week have further intensified speculation surrounding a move away.
Juventus emerged as Martial’s primary suitors but the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo killed speculation of a move to Turin.
The German champions were also reportedly interest, but Rummenigge – the club’s spokesman – has insisted the current squad has enough wingers as it is.
“We have four wingers: Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry,” he said.
“And Alphonso Davies will also join in January. You must not overdo it, like some clubs do, or you create a problem for the coach.”
Bayern appeared to be a strong candidate to sign Martial ahead of the summer. Veteran wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery are surely heading into their last season amid a change of transfer policy in Munich revolving around fostering a new generation. The days of Thomas Muller, Phillip Lahm, Javi Martinez, Jerome Boateng and Robert Lewandowski are over for a club no longer the force it was in European football.
But it looks as if any transfer for Martial will have to wait for another season at least. The 22-year-old may end up staying at Old Trafford in January for the simple reason of a lack of proper suitors.
