Gary Neville has lambasted the lack of consistency and structure in Manchester United’s side.
The Reds were handed a hiding by Tottenham Hotspur in a terrible second half at Old Trafford as two goals from Lucas Moura and a header from Harry Kane gave the visitors a 3-0 win.
It means it’s been Man United’s worst start to a season since 1992, with two defeats in their opening three games and seven goals conceded.
Neville credited the poor performances to a lack of regularity in United’s starting line-up, and the fact that there appears to be no proper structure.
“There’s such a disorganisation at times that they’re always going to get beaten once the games settled down,” Neville said on Sky Sports.
“Even though there was a lot of spirit in the performance, there was no structure.” The former-England and United right-back was contrasting United to their Monday night opponents. It is relatively easy to predict Mauricio Pochettino’s side before games, whereas Jose Mourinho’s team is a surprise every time.
It leaves United with the element of surprise at the start of games, but with problems once the opposition figures out how to nullify the new threat. Against Spurs, Ander Herrera was played in a back three alongside Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. That threw Tottenham initially, and United looked the better side until 40 minutes or so into the game. But after half-time, Spurs ran the rule over Old Trafford and ripped United’s three-man defence apart.
Sooner or later, Marouane Fellaini was brought on, as he often is by Mourinho in times of crisis for United. He is United’s plan B, and the players know how to play when he’s on the pitch. But quite what plan A is for United isn’t clear. And that is the problem.
