Chris Smalling has backed Manchester United to cope much better in high-pressure situations this season in comparison to previous years due to the growing experience within the current squad.
The 28-year-old is entering his ninth campaign as a Man United player and is now one of the more experienced members of Jose Mourinho’s squad amongst an array of younger talent.
In an exclusive interview with MUTV ahead of Friday night’s Premier League opener against Leicester City at Old Trafford, Smalling explained why he thinks high-pressure situations will be dealt with better this season.
“I think you do take [the growing experience within the squad] on, our squad is getting younger and there are players who have won things. I think we are a lot more used to those high-pressure situations.”
Smalling is once again expected to play a pivotal role in Jose Mourinho’s plans and could start in Friday’s curtain-raiser.
He was tipped to leave United in the summer due to the impending arrival of a new centre-back, but no move materialised and Smalling lives to fight another day as a key defensive option.
United are chasing an unlikely Premier League title triumph this term but they’re not expected to be able to topple heavy title favourites Manchester City.
Let’s hope United can get off to a fine start this weekend.
