Andreas Pereira‘s superb pre-season tour with Manchester United has earned him a spot in Jose Mourinho’s side for the 2018/19 campaign, according to reports.
The Brazilian had enjoyed two successful seasons on loan in La Liga, first with Granada and then with Valencia, ahead of the club’s tour of the United States.
And he was Man United’s best midfielder during the tour, bringing vitality and skill to the No.6 role in games against Club America, San Jose Earthquakes and AC Milan, with his crowning moment coming in the form of a wondrous free-kick against Liverpool.
According to the Mirror‘s David McDonnell, Pereira has earned the trust of Mourinho over pre-season and will start the club’s opening game of the season against Leicester City on August 10.
Pereira needed to step into the spotlight this summer and, helped by the absence of key players, he has done exactly that. The 443 minutes he played over pre-season was more than any other member of the squad and he made those minutes count.
His ability to shift the ball and pick out players further up the pitch – in a position he is not used to by any stretch having largely played out wide in Spain – was impressive. What was crucial, however, was his temperament. He looks mentally armed to play at this level, and that, above anything, is why Mourinho has decided to take him on for the new season.
