Barcelona defender Yerry Mina is edging closer to a move to Manchester United this summer, according to several reports.
The club’s pursuit of Toby Alderweireld has proven to be a protracted affair, with Tottenham Hotspur demanding a fee in excess of £60m.
Man United have been told they will need to shell out an even larger figure for Leicester City Harry Maguire, prompting Ed Woodward to instead target Mina, who had a superb World Cup with Colombia and is considered surplus to requirements at Barcelona.
According to Sky Sports, United have abandoned their pursuit of Maguire and indeed diverted their efforts towards signing Mina with a week left until the transfer window closes.
Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo – which shouldn’t be taken as gospel – has reported that negotiations with Mina have been underway for some time and that the defender has agreed terms of a contract with United.
“After ten days of negotiations, the future of Yerry Mina could finally be decided this Thursday,” the Spanish paper claimed.
“His agent has on the table all the firm proposals by the player and is waiting for Manchester United to take the final step to sign the central Colombian.
“Yerry and United have practically agreed on the terms of the contract, but it is still necessary for the Manchester club and FC Barcelona to reach an agreement for the transfer.”
Mina’s links with United came abruptly and heavily and out of nowhere, which usually entails there is something in these rumours. Maguire looks to be off the table, whereas Spurs are playing hardball over Alderweireld – like they do with all their players.
Mina, on the other hand, would cost considerably less and is viewed as dispensable by Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde, who didn’t have much of a say over his transfer to the club in January.
