Jose Mourinho unsuccessfully attempted to bring Real Madrid pair Gareth Bale and Toni Kroos to Manchester United earlier this summer, according to reports from Spain.
Bale has been a long term target for Man United, with Mourinho stating last summer he would jump at the chance to sign him should be become surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu.
Kroos, on the other hand, was on the verge of joining United from Bayern Munich in 2014, only for Louis van Gaal to jettison the deal.
According to Spanish media outlet Marca‘s David Medina, Mourinho told United’s hierarchy to place emphasis on securing the Madrid pair ahead of the transfer window. Both of them have ended up staying put.
Mourinho would have banked on Madrid having something of a fire sale over the summer – a jamboree of incomings and outgoings – following the departures of Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo, along with the fact that, despite further continental success, they finished miles behind Barcelona in La Liga last season. Big changes were surely going to occur.
But precious little has happened – for now, at least. The European champions have only made two major signings: winger Vicinius Jr from Flamengo and full-back Alvaro Odriozola from Real Sociedad. Crucially, no big names have departed aside from Ronaldo.
The main upshot from this lack of change is that both Kroos and Bale remain fundamental to the Madrid squad, with the latter charged the taking the reins from Ronaldo over the new campaign.
