Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed that he offered to play for free in his second season at Manchester United.
The Swede plundered 27 goals in a spectacular opening campaign under Jose Mourinho, only to suffer severe ligament damage against Anderlecht in April 2017.
He nonetheless signed a new deal at Old Trafford and returned to the pitch in just seven months, but ultimately found himself consigned to just a handful of games as his knee continued to present problems, and joined LA Galaxy in March.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Zlatan remarked how he didn’t care about money ahead of his second season at Old Trafford, noting he just wanted to play.
“The situation was not about having a contract and earning money – it was the opposite,” he said. “I said, ‘I don’t want a salary, you keep it.'”
“The mind can be ready but the knee was not ready.
“When I was ready, I said to myself ‘I am not there’. They had a Zlatan before. After, I was not ready to be that Zlatan.
“I was selected in many of the games but I told the coach: ‘Listen, I am not ready. I don’t want to disappoint you. The respect I have for my team-mates and the coach. Select someone else who can do the job better.’ I stood up and did it, even if I am Zlatan.”
Much like when you make an unnecessarily large amount of pasta just for yourself, Zlatan’s eyes were too big for his stomach (or knee, I guess) last season.
To see him return within the space of seven months from an injury which can sometimes keep players out for a whole year was, above anything, a testament to his immense mental fortitude. But a bad knee is a bad knee. And Zlatan, try as he might, was never able to recover the zip and power which propelled him to such a fantastic opening campaign at Old Trafford.
He is faring much better in the MLS, where he has netted 11 times in 14 games.
