Eden Hazard has spoken effusively of the way Romelu Lukaku has relentlessly improved himself over the last few years.
The Belgian, following four impressive campaigns with Everton, moved to Old Trafford last summer for a fee of £75m.
And he duly lived up to his lofty price tag, claiming 27 goals in all competitions at Manchester United and netting four goals in two games at the World Cup for Belgium.
Speaking ahead of Belgium’s last 16 meeting with Japan, Hazard hailed Lukaku for continuing to improve himself next season.
“What’s great about having Romelu is that he doesn’t need many chances to score,” he said.
“Maybe a few years ago, he needed more. The reason why he’s in the category of the very best strikers is that when he gets three chances in a game, he scores two.
“In terms of movement, he’s better than he was a few years ago. In terms of defending, he does more.”
There is always a possibility that a player, having proven himself at the highest level, loses that inner determination to keep learning, to keep improving. They look at what they have achieved and use that as evidence of them having “made it”.
Not Lukaku. The 25-year-old is a ruthless worker, more driven that most of his peers, and at his core a truly humble individual. Never once has he thought to put his feet up.
And that, more than anything, was what delighted supporters last season: to see a player visibly challenging himself to improve, working towards goals, never relenting in his pursuit of being better than he was last game.
He doesn’t just have the markings of a future United star; he could well be a viable United captain.
