David de Gea has posted a bold message on social media following Spain’s humiliating penalty shootout exit from the World Cup on Sunday.
The Spaniard had come under scrutiny following shaky performances in the group stages, most notably in the opening game against Portugal.
He had the chance to become Spain’s hero in the shootout but failed to make a single save as Koke and Iago Aspas missed their spot-kicks, handing the hosts an unlikely place in the quarter finals.
And De Gea has taken to social media today to send an subtle dig at those who had maliciously criticised him and, strikingly, described the current Spain team as “f*****”, which you could hardly argue with given the ponderous nature of their performance in Moscow.
Para quienes apoyasteis, criticasteis con respeto y sufristeis con nosotros, gracias. Estamos jodidos pero nos levantaremos y no dejaremos de intentarlo
To whom supported, suffered and criticised us with respect, thanks. We're fucked but we'll get up again and never give up. pic.twitter.com/es4NBr05CD— David de Gea (@D_DeGea) July 2, 2018
“To whom supported, suffered and criticised us with respect, thanks. We’re fucked but we’ll get up again and never give up.”
I cannot tell you whether this is an accurate translation or not. Perhaps De Gea intends to use a world slightly different but one which means the same thing.
Either way, to present De Gea as the scapegoat here is nothing short of ludicrous. It was hardly his fault that Spain made over 1000 passes without penetrating once; it was not his fault that Gerard Pique gave away a penalty; it was certainly not his fault that the Spaniard’s couldn’t hold their nerves in a penalty shootout.
He will, you suspect, be glad to have some time away from the microphones and jeers ahead of returning to Manchester United for pre-season.
