Manchester United star Chris Smalling has responded indirectly to the club’s links with Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, believing the reports will never end.
The Englishman has been at Old Trafford for quite some time and has been consistently written off as not good enough for the club but has managed to fight on.
Jose Mourinho himself invested in two centre-backs in two seasons, bringing in Eric Bailly from Villareal and Victor Lindelof from Benfica.
Neither player has managed to establish themselves in the starting XI or to even provide real competition to Smalling for a spot in the first team.
However, there’s belief if Maguire makes the move to United then the former Fulham man will certainly lose his spot though he’s brushed off those concerns.
According to Manchester Evening News, Chris said: “This club is always linked to centre-backs, whether it’s the club or agents or whoever, because the best come here.
“I’m happy and when I’m fit I play, so I just want to carry on from last season and right now the shirt’s mine and I intend to keep it.”
Unfortunately for the supporters, Smalling seems to have slowly worked his way into Mourinho’s heart last season after featuring more times than many expected.
Due to the other defenders’ absences caused by injuries, the centre-back was actually available more than any one of the Portuguese’s other options.
It is expected though that should Eric or Victor prove themselves fit and firing, Chris would genuinely lose his spot in the future.
