Reports in Italy suggest that Ivan Gazidis is close to leaving Arsenal for Serie A side AC Milan as the club’s new CEO (via The Express).
It’s something which Arsenal fans certainly wouldn’t have minded a few years ago but in the last few months, things have changed.
The club’s chief executive, Ivan Gazidis has been the subject of anger from more than a few Arsenal fans in recent seasons but many more have been impressed with his apparent work in recent months.
The man who joined the club in 2009 has overseen a major restructuring in recent months following the departure of Arsene Wenger.
The trio of Gazidis, Raul Sannlehi and Sven Mislintat have all grown in influence in recent months which is why this news from Italy is so surprising.
A number of publications including Calcio Mercato and Corriere Dello Sport both claim that Gazidis is closing in on a move to AC Milan.
The reports suggest that the Serie A side are keen on making Gazidis the club’s new CEO and that the club’s hierarchy will be meeting on Saturday to discuss the move further.
It’s certainly an unexpected story. Many had assumed that Ivan Gazidis had effectively won the backroom power struggles against Arsene Wenger. He’s assembled a clearly capable team in the club’s hierarchy with himself at the centre so it would be a major surprise for him to leave the club now.
