Manchester City star Benjamin Mendy has labelled Manchester United star Paul Pogba as a hungry leader following their time together with France.
The pair are now World Cup winners after their nation lifted the trophy mid-July though it’s fair to say the latter played a bigger role than the former.
Pogba had an outstanding tournament, starring consistently for his country and even being named man of the match in the final for a goalscoring display.
The midfielder’s leadership skills were clearly showing on the pitch as he showed plenty of maturity but videos were soon released of his team-talks.
Mendy definitely experienced several of those and it saw Paul being labelled as leader now more so than ever before.
According to Manchester Evening News, Benjamin said: “Before every game he was the one using his mouth to speak, giving big, big words to the team.
“You see him – he’s very hungry. It’s perfect for the team. If you’re Paul Pogba and do some haircuts or something else then everybody speaks, speaks, speaks.
“But he played so well, and now has won the World Cup, so there is not much you can say really.
“He was at Juventus with Marchisio and Pirlo and you take everything from a situation like that. Now he’s in Manchester he takes more. He’s a leader.”
Despite the former Juventus star’s obvious leadership skills, Jose Mourinho opted to name Antonio Valencia as his captain ahead of the new Premier League season.
It technically makes sense as the Ecuadorian was vice-captain last campaign and actually had the armband for the majority of the time as Michael Carrick was injured.
Nonetheless, there was hope (at least amongst the fans) it would go to either Pogba or Romelu Lukaku following their impressive performances for their respective nations at the World Cup.
