Matteo Darmian has once again made it clear that he wants to move back to Serie A next season following a period of anonymity at Manchester United.
The Italian enjoyed a decent opening campaign under Jose Mourinho, impressing most notably in the Europa League final, but hardly featured over the 2017/18 campaign.
He made a total of 12 starts in nine months, with three of those coming in dead rubber Premier League fixtures towards the end of the season.
And Darmian, somewhat unsurprisingly, has confirmed that he will return to Italy over the summer in an attempt to secure some actual game time next term.
“I believe Mancini is a winner, and the right choice for Italy’s national team,” he said.
“I’ll try to deserve a starter shirt, but it’s not easy at United. My agent knows what I want. Juve, Inter or Napoli?
“It’s not my role to answer that question, I’ll move for the best solution and I’d consider all possibilities.
“One year ago, I was close to return to Italy but Mourinho and the club didn’t want to sell me so nothing happened. An important proof of esteem, but I’m now looking for continuity.”
Darmian has for some time been linked with a move to Juventus, but the arrival of right-back Joao Cancelo from Valencia has placed doubt over whether this move will actually go through. Whether or not the Italian join the Old Lady is largely down to whether Mattia De Sciglio opts to leave as well.
Either way, the dye has been cast. Darmian is not going to spend another season watching from the stands at Old Trafford when he has offers waiting for him at home.
