AC Milan CEO Marco Fassone has dealt a huge blow to Manchester United’s transfer plans after insisting that Leonardo Bonucci was set to stay.
The Italian emerged as one of Jose Mourinho’s transfer targets after he announced his intentions to invest in the club’s defence and midfield.
Having brought in Fred and Diogo Dalot, it’s said that the centre-back position is what he’s focusing on next and so United have been linked with many stars across Europe.
Mourinho reportedly wants to bring in an experienced, proven defender which is certainly what Bonucci represents but unfortunately Fassone has turned down the rumours.
Whether the player himself has any interest in the move is not clear but the Italian giants have made themselves as transparent as can be.
According to Calcio Mercato, Marco said: “Leo is our captain, he is not one of the players we are discussing or negotiating. He is one of the team’s strong points and he will stay with us for a long time.”
AC Milan have the struggle of keeping their top players at the club not only because they didn’t qualify for the Champions League but also because they’ve received a ban.
Their trouble with the Financial Fair Play rules has meant that they’re not allowed to feature in the Europa League next season despite qualifying for it.
Whether Leonardo will push for a move to happen or not remains to be seen but it he certainly will have to attempt to do so since the club don’t want to sell him.
